Guten Tag,
I am applying for a research fellowship in Germany and a mentor is one of the requirements. If anyone is interested in occasional feedback and disscussion it would be greatly appreciated. Location, other than in Germany, is not an issue.
My topic is reuse in design. We seldom think about where our building materials utimately expire let alone what happens during the construction process. I believe solid construction waste can be cut to a minimum of biogradable materials and the rest re-used if a new process is considered. There is room for change, from the first time the pencil hits the napkin, to the last touch of paint. Alternative building materials and methods will also be investigated. There is great potential in storage containers. At this point I feel they have proven their value to the architectural community. But this is only one proud example of the many modular materials available to designers. I also plan to reconsider design methods for assembly and dissassembly as well as general recycling. Scrap steel is currently the only building material which has a value for feasable recycling. Other materials have been re-used or recycled for tax incentives or marketing purposes. But there should be a system for re-use that doesnt rely on ploys. I am of course not talking about the elimination of industry or manufacture but a shift from production to reuse. There has been some work on these subjects, but I know there is room to take it farther.
Please contact me if you are interested in the correspondance mentorship or would like any additional information. If you know anyone else who might take interest I would appreciate it if you could forward them my email or post.
Sincerely,
Lukas Kronawitter

| Here is an article about The Big Dig House that was built with recycled materials from the Big Dig project in Boston. There are many stories about it if you do a search for "big dig house" |
