Is it good to hide behind anonymity? Perhaps it would make every adult more responsible for what they say. In my opinion if a person can't put themselves out here why should we care what they say?
We talk about how impersonal the internet is but are we not making it so? _________________ Chris Stewart

If I 'google' my real name I immediately (0.07 seconds!!) get 17 entries describing me in detail, webpages I have created, message books I have visited, organisations I am a member of, newspapers which have published my letters and opinions etc. etc.
I am not comfortable sharing all these aspects of my life with every stranger I meet on the internet. Some control is preferable. |

We should not be afraid of being who we are and letting others see that. I did some mighty stupid things when I was young, (and I still do) so what? Am I supposed to be afraid of what someone will think of me?
There is no reason every single thing anyone does has to be exposed. When I google my name I get so many chris stewarts that no one would have any idea which one was me.
I can see it being an issue for women and children for security reasons. Although I think the threat is almost none on most forums.
We do have control. When we do things online that we are ashamed of we can use anonymity but for everyday activities it does us no good to hide behind a mask.
I do think there are appropriate times for anonymity, for instance whistle blowers need to protect themselves, dating services, etc.. Otherwise I can assure you lekizz that there is nothing I could find out about you online that I would care about unless it is maybe something we have in common. _________________ Chris Stewart

I would have to disagree. Other than offical pages I do not want people I may or may not know being able to track me on the net. With the Feds going after Google and MSN for search results and IPs you really cant be too careful these days. _________________ Moderator note: Signature block spam is still spam! |

Recently a student in my wives department lost a chance for a congressional internship over the summer because he had a page on facebook with a nice big picture of him and a bong.
More and more companies are doing searches of potential employees. So if you are doing things on the web you are not proud of then you should use anonymity in those instances. _________________ Chris Stewart

i'm not sure you could call your username your real name...
especially since it could easily be read as "cs in texas" or could be mistaken as just random letters...
now if it were in firstname lastname format like 'john smith' i would consider that using your real name |

Doesn't it depend what one is doing "behind" the name ?
I could understand if - for example - an architect wished to express views that he might not want to be heard by an employer. That does not mean that they are doing anything wrong.
When asked, Chris is perfectly happy to give his name. And of course we do not know, unless it can be traced, if the "real" name is correct. Is Kevin's real name Phishfood ? Will we ever know ?
However I could not help smiling at the example of a problem for someone seeking a job near the US Government. Jeff Gannon, a.k.a. Bulldog. James Dale Guckert got found out, didn't he ? _________________ Richard Haut has worked with the architectural profession for over 25 years and produces the weekly Richard Haut's Competitions, which has given architects details of many thousands of projects for which they can apply across Britain and Europe. |

Of course, people are proud of what they are 'doing' here in these forums.
But damn, Richard, I wanted you to keep that secret!

Of coarse you are correct Richard. There is no way for you to prove I am really chris stewart.
It's more a matter of principle. I stated from the begining that there are times when anonymity is appropriate. Certainly the kid in the above example should have kept that private.
At the same time complete anonymity (IMO) gives the web a very impersonal feel. _________________ Chris Stewart

Interesting. I work with a Chris Stewart (not the one on this forum) and there was another Chris Stewart recently elected to the Minneapolis School Board being asked to step down because of a racist blog site he posted. Chris Stewart is not enough of an identifier.
For me, Kevin knows who I am. But if you Google my persona name, Davydd, you will get a deluge of breaded pork tenderloin sandwich information. _________________ Davydd
