http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/03/31/pet.food.recall.ap/index.html

The list of dangerous foods continues to expand, now including dry food, and multiple manufacturers. The only constant so far is a common thread of contaminated wheat gluten. Dogs and cats are dying in Oregon and nationwide. Many more are sick, and potentially, getting permanent kidney damage without strong clear symptoms, and therefore without diagnosis, that may limit their long-term health and longevity.

BASED ON INFORMATION TO DATE THIS IS THE SAFEST COURSE:

1) DO NOT USE any pet food, wet or dry, that has "wheat gluten" as an ingredient.

2) Even better, use only excellent, serious all-natural foods, that include a statement like, "Contains no grain fractions."

There is currently no way for consumers to tell if a pet food product containing wheat gluten is safe or not. The recalls are likely to be expanded again. Until the situation has settled down and reliable, stable information has emerged -- just don't use it.

Kevin

you mention going organic - with which I wholeheartedly agree, but the following article about disappearing bee colonies across the US and elsewhere is not a good sign.

somehow the idea that sixty million cans of pet food across a hundred different brands have to be withdrawn because of one tainted source seems unlikely, especially with complaints in the hundreds of thousands.
