The NPR story with Griffin's comments, "NASA Chief Questions Urgency of Global Warming", is now available online at:
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=10571499

Griffin:
"I'm aware that global warming exists. I understand that the bulk of scientific evidence accumulated supports the claim that we've had about a one degree centigrade rise in temperature over the last century to within an accuracy of 20 percent. I'm also aware of recent findings that appear to have nailed down — pretty well nailed down the conclusion that much of that is manmade. Whether that is a longterm concern or not, I can't say."

"I have no doubt that … a trend of global warming exists. I am not sure that it is fair to say that it is a problem we must wrestle with. To assume that it is a problem is to assume that the state of Earth's climate today is the optimal climate, the best climate that we could have or ever have had and that we need to take steps to make sure that it doesn't change. "

Also now online is are brief remarks from leading NASA climate scientist Jim Hansen:

Worth a listen!

'Hansen also takes issue with NASA administrator Michael Griffin's views on global warming during an interview with Madeleine Brand. Griffin told NPR's Morning Edition that he isn't sure global warming is a problem we must tackle, a view Hansen says is "remarkably uninformed."'

I heard the interview with Mr Griffin this morning, and was shocked -- and pleased that the interviewer pressed him on his views. In combination with Mr Bush's apparent wish to devote scarce NASA funds to establishing a controversial Moon base, this is not a good year for the space agency.

Some other leading climate scientists have weighed in with their various forms of dismay at Griffin's perspective:

NASA Chief Assailed for Climate Comments
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=10613389

"Morning Edition, June 1, 2007 · Policymakers and scientists are strongly criticizing comments by Michael Griffin, the head of NASA. In an earlier interview with NPR, he said that he's not sure global warming is an issue that the space agency — or humans — need to "wrestle with.""

Griffin has now had a chance to revise his remarks, and has declined. His shocking comments stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the objective policy direction of his agency, which has recently canceled or delayed six important earth-science missions.

I really do think NASA and its remote-sensing priorities are a crucial piece of the whole climate understanding-and-response puzzle. Frankly, a forced change of NASA Administrator over the next few months might really help, both functionally and politically, with the ongoing turning of the tide toward stabilizing the planet.
