I am considering buying a raw building space...the first floor is about 3000 sqft loft space and the upstairs is 1000 sqft apartment space. We would make the whole space our home, but there would be a music/band space included. When deciding where to put the master bedroom, we assumed we would put it upstairs but have been told that the master belongs downstairs. What is the best place to put a master bedroom?

It depends upon your choice, but mostly in ground floors guest bedrooms are made, and masters goes up stairs.

It varies by locality, here in Texas the master is often down but up north it is much more common for the master to be up. The only advantage of having at least one bedroom suite downstairs is for disability.

addressing the issue of public/private space is the most important. upper floors of a home are typically seen as more private.

i think it should be your own personal preference. there are many questions to consider. For example, how long will you be living there? age? health? privacy? noise factors? There is nothing set in stone, that is why there are many variations for floor plans...Have fun with it!
