I'm about to put an addition on my ranch. The existing house has an "L" shape to it, so there's a gable facing the street. If I add a gable to the other side of the house, its rake will have a more acute angle -- so it'll be a mismatch. Why? I bump up against a 15-foot setback requirement on that side.

I haven't seen any house with such a mismatch -- so is this is a big mistake or an opportunity to shine?

An opportunity to shine in what way?

It would be nice to see photos of what you have.

Here's are some photos (I think). The addition will occupy the chimney side. The easy way out is to just extend the existing roofline (set back a few feet, of course), but I like the idea of another gable -- except it would have a more acute angle than the existing one due to property setback requirements (15 feet). The addition will have a very large window and a farmer's porch, so maybe that will distract the eye from the mismatch?
