The following speed tests are not scientific. They are simply for comparison. All tests were run after a hard reboot, with no other applications running.
TEST FILE: 5.76 MB size. The test file contains 72 layers, over 45,000 objects (symbols, hatches, patterns, and text at varying sizes). Edit All Layers turned on. All page scrolling set to 90% and 32 pixels. Text greeking was set to 3 point to force text rendering even at full zoom out.
TEST CONFIGURATION
Power Mac Dual 2 GHz G5
2.5 GB RAM
160 GB Internal Hard Drive
ATI Radeon X800 XT with 256 MB RAM
20" Apple Cinema Display, 1680x1050, 32-bit color
Mac OS X 10.4.9
Mac Classic OS 9.2.2 (running min. extensions)
PowerCADD 2000 (PC5)
Version 5.0.6
Edit All Layers turned on.
Zoom to Fit: 1.5 sec. (very fast!)
Page Scroll: 45.0 sec. (painfully slow!)
PowerCADD 6 (PC6)
Version 6.2.1 Build EE17
Edit All Layers turned on.
Transparent Drawing on.
Scale Patterns on.
Zoom to Fit: 3.5 sec. (decent performance)
Page Scroll: 12.0 sec. (decent performance)
PowerCADD 7 (PC7)
Version 7.0.6 Build HC05
Edit All Layers turned on.
Transparent Drawing on.
Scale Patterns on.
Zoom to Fit: 4.0 sec. (a tad slower than PC6)
Page Scroll: 14.0 sec. (a tad slower than PC6)
PowerCADD 8 Test - Using Print Preview View (slower, higher quality).

Macbook Pro 2.5GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB memory
200GB 7200 RPM hard drive
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT with 512MB RAM
20" Apple Cinema Display, 1680x1050, 32-bit color
Mac OS X 10.5.2
PowerCADD 8 (PC8)
Version 8.0.0 Build HD04
Edit All Layers turned on.
Transparent Drawing on.
Scale Patterns on.
Zoom to Fit: 1.0 sec. (very, very fast!)
Page Scroll: 12.5 sec. (still quite good) |

quite interesting -- thanks!
Have you tried PC8's "turbo mode" (or whatever it is called)? I personally have relatively simple files and like the wysiswyg appearance, but I was curious how fast the fast mode is.

| High Performance View (aka Fast Drawing Mode) is extremely fast! But there is a sacrifice: you lose WYSIWYG. I would think that people who draw extremely complex mechanical parts would certainly benefit. I can see myself using it to zoom, pan, and navigate a bulky file. But I will mostly stick with higher quality WYSIWYG. |

| Very interesting. From your earlier post, it would seem that PCAD 7 is actually slower on the intel Mac than it is on the Power Mac. I wonder if the same would have been true for version 8 if it had been designed for the Power macs? |

Rosetta is required to run PowerPC based app's on Intel hardware. The introduction of that emulator would easily account for the expected performance difference.
In theory -- PCD8 in all likely hood would have been faster than PCD7 given all the changes that have taken place under the hood (Open GL, etc.). However it's futile to speculate since we're trying to compare a product that doesn't exist (PCD8 for PowerPC Hardware) with one that does (PCD7 for PowerPC and PCD8 for Intel).

True, huc. But it is still an interesting speculation since the Power mac version had half the ram and half the vram that the Intel mac had. Oh well, I suppose that I'll not know in the near future since I don't currently have the available funds to fork out for brand new hardware just to upgrade the software.
