You need to use cut (that icon with like two squares superimposed or something. look in i-deas help if you can't find it, type boolean or cut). It asks you which is the fixed part (where you want to cut FROM) and the movable part (the chunk you want to take out).

Incidentally if you need to make for example a wheel with holes in a pattern (to make it lighter) I-deas requires you to make the part to cut out, pattern it (circular pattern) and then do a boolean subtract (NOT intersect or join). Whereas in Pro/Engineer, you make the cut and pattern the cut.

IMPORTANT thing. The part to remove has to be a separate part. So in the model when you sketch on a plane and extrude or revolve (or whatever) you need to select new part in the little box (in the window that pops up when you make a solid out of a sketch) where it says

join
cut
new part
...

basically ideas is strange so one part file can actually contain separate parts while you are modelling to allow for it's (frankly crap) way of doing boolean operations.

In your case you should sketch a circle or something, extrude or revolve to create the fluid, make it a separate part. go to boolean cut (or subtract, can't remember the icon name) and select the movable and immovable part. hope it goes well
