Hi I am in my final year of university and my topic for my dissertation is Vernacular Architecture; a style or a philosophy? Does New Vernacular architecture turn philosophy into style? My heart is very much into this debate, however I would like to hear other peoples points of views and also if anyone knows any texts to read I would very much appriciate it.

| I would no consider it a style, but inspiration for a style, perhaps. What I mean is that often vernacular architecture does its best to be efficient for the given climate while relating to the culture. Nonvernacular architecture that employs many vernacular aspects have, in my experience, been used for inspiration on environmental design responses. The difference, I would say, is the rigorous planning that architects do in addition to these basic efficiency responses. So I would say that it's inspiration for a style; maybe it should be called the Vernacular Style, or Cultural Style, or maybe it could be a variation on biomimicry. |

The term vernacular is derived from the Latin vernaculus, meaning "domestic, native, indigenous"; from verna, meaning "native slave" or "home-born slave".
Vernacular architecture is a term used to categorize methods of construction which use locally available resources to address local needs. Vernacular architecture tends to evolve over time to reflect the environmental, cultural and historical context in which it exists.
In contrast to planned architecture by architects, the building knowledge in vernacular architecture is often transported by local traditions and is thus more - but not only - based on knowledge achieved by trial and error and often handed down through the generations rather than calculated on knowledge of geometry and physics.
seems like the best way to write about it would be to remove yourself from the conformity school setting and gain some experiential knowledge with a rural peoples.

vernacular architecture is a style.... which u find mostly in d southern parts of india..... it all comes from the application of the materials n d defined spaces.......there r lots of elements which comes in vernacular architecture......n d best architect for it is laurie baker...do read his philosophies to interlink ur ideas.........  |

| vernacular describes more a method of building rather than a style... there could be many different 'styles' within a single vernacular method of construction... |
