SDR millennium club Joined: 02 Oct 2004 Posts: 1716 Location: San Francisco	Posted: Wed Jun 01, 2005 11:29 am    Post subject: Bush speaks (?) to detainee abuse . . .During a press conference on May 31st, President Bush was asked to reply to an Amnesty International accusation about our prison in Guantanamo being a brutal gulag. Quoth Bush:     "In terms of, umm -- you know, the -- the detainees, we've had thousands of people detained. We've investigated every single complaint against the detainees. It seemed like to me they based some of their decisions on, on the word of, uhh -- and the allegations -- by people who were held in detention, people who hate America, people that had been trained in some instances to disassemble -- that means not tell the truth. And so it was an absurd report. It just is. And, uhh, you know -- yes, sir." SDR _________________ "I'm the commander . . . see, I do not need to explain why I say things. That's the interesting thing about being the president. Maybe somebody needs to explain to me why they say something, but I don't feel like I owe anybody an explanation." GWB

It certainly has nothing in common with any American notions of justice or the rule of law. ..." http://www.nytimes.com/2005/06/05/opinion/05sun1.html "What makes Amnesty's gulag metaphor apt is that Guantánamo is merely one of a chain of shadowy detention camps that also includes Abu Ghraib in Iraq, the military prison at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan and other, secret locations run by the intelligence agencies. Each has produced its own stories of abuse, torture and criminal homicide. These are not isolated incidents, but part of a tightly linked global detention system with no accountability in law. Prisoners have been transferred from camp to camp. So have commanding officers. And perhaps not coincidentally, so have specific methods of mistreatment. ..."
