Its nice to hear such interesting stuffs about Varanasi, but what counts is how can we preserve it.
Some years back Govt. took a decition to paint the ghats of Varanasi to preserve it
Note that the ghats are made of stones and painting them will be @#$%@, though the idea was dropped due to the resistance but still......... _________________ ......and miles to go before I sleep....... |

| Are there some good organizations, do you know, who are working for this preservation? Do they have any Web presence? Maybe people could contribute... |

Its really nice that you have shown your interest in this issue
Surely NGOs are working for such a cause....but Iam unaware of their web portal.
Check out these links
http://www.ideaforaction.org/opportunity.html
http://gist.ap.nic.in/intach/
This might not be of great help but I will surely try to contact those working for this. _________________ ......and miles to go before I sleep....... |

Varanasi has been fortunate so far that it lies in an area where there has been very little development and so change and interference have not been a major threat ,but time is running out pretty quickly.Besides the threat of insensitive modernisation, the ghats really need a big dose of cleaning, repair ,preservation and greening to bring them back to the old days of "anand-van",the forest of happiness.
It really does need help....

More fortunate thing about Varanasi is that, it is a religious center, really if someone wants to get it back to those days then orienting the movement as a religious prestige will be very nice and effective.
If Govt. really want this task to be done without spending much then this would be the best idea...you will get free manpower and some amount of free money to spend over it...someone should really do something before its too late _________________ ......and miles to go before I sleep....... |

The Sankat Mochan foundation has been working on the Clean Ganges Project ,mostly on water quality, and has done some work on cleaning 8 ghats .They can be contacted at vbm@satyam.net.in.Their website does not seem to be working as of now.
Sankat Mochan is one of the most important temples in Varanasi and would be a good vehicle for your idea.
Intach does do some work on the ghats ,but no project is currently on.
JICA was also doing a pilot project on Manikarnika Ghat, but currently their office here seems to have moved.
Still trying to find more info. |

Hi!
Its nice that someone is working for this cause, but do you think, that will be enough for the upliftment of the old glory of Varanasi....you live in Varanasi, how you feel about the current situation there... _________________ ......and miles to go before I sleep....... |

Nowhere near enough is being done...conservation is not high priority sadly and there are not enough funds with most organisations....
Intach has some projects on the ghats, check their site www.intach.org,they can be contacted at intach@del3.vsnl.net.in.
If local bodies, religious leaders and people are motivated there may be hope..... |
