| They're usless just like tradition Batts. The only form of good insulation is rigid foam because there are no air gaps and the foam bridges the wooden stud in the roof and walls. |

I have since scrapped the idea of using cotton insulation
and have opted for blown celluose insulation. The celluose,
blown into walls and attic spaces seems to be the ideal
solution to acheiving an energy efficient home while
utilizing recycled materials and helping to ease the burden
on landfills etc. Also, in large enough spaces, the celluose
does not require a vapor barrier and does an excellent job
of sealing up cracks and crevices. |

Hope you didn't blow any walls out.... Just kidding.
What's even worse about cotton and traditional Batts insulation is they test it with no air speed and at a temperature of 75-F. At 75-F why do we need insulation at all?
Any foam that is rigid works the best and ideally you want it to cover all the metals and/or wooden studs to prevent thermal shocks ( metal) or thermal bridging (wood).
Having said that, it is always good to coat the exterior walls and roofs with a heat-reflective paint applied at a DFT of 28-35 mils with a durable polymer. |

I have used cellulose on all projects for the past 10 years I think it offers the greatest cost to performance benefit. I agree ridged foam performs better.
