Ecologists won first battle for green Sochi Olympics 2014.

October 22, 2007, the Maykop City Court upheld the lawsuit of Valery Brinikh, co-chairman of the International Social and Ecological Union, and invalidated the order of Russia's Natural Resource Ministry that stripped roughly 10,000 hectares of Sochi National Park of the strict protection status.

Sochi is the largest resort region of the Russian Federation. It is located between the Caucasian mountains and the Black Sea. The climate in Sochi is subtropical and the city usually has 200 sunny days a year. The average summer temperature is 78 F and 27 F in the winter. There are no large industrial facilities in the Sochi area, so the air quality is considered among the best in the world. Sochi has over 200,000 hectares of forest and several specially protected natural zones: the Caucasian National Biosphere Reserve, Sochi National Park, the Russian Federation National Wildlife Sanctuary, and over 30 botanical gardens and parks housing over 30,000 wild-life plant species.

Initially, the Olympics village and bobsleigh route with relevant infrastructure were planned on the territories of Sochi National Park and the buffer zone of the Caucasus biosphere preserve, which is a part of the World Natural Heritage Property, "Western Caucasus". According to Greenpeace-Russia, construction operations will inevitably cause the destruction of habitats and migration routes of rare species inhabiting this area and included in the international and Russia Red Data Book.

Valery Brinikh went to court to challenge the National Resource Ministry's order of August 27, 2006 that canceled the strict protection status for 10,000 hectares where a number of key facilities for Sochi 2014 Olympics are to be constructed. Following the court's decision the Olympic Organizing Committee must now relocate the projected Olympic venues out of the borders of the buffer zone of the preserve and Sochi National Park. This will prove that the Russian government sincerely cares about the image of Russia and protection of world heritage.
