My dear friends,
I thought that you would like to know, that WalMart is planning on tearing down 1 of the 4 remaining, original, in-the-round performance venues left in America.
It was the brain child of Lewis T. Fisher, Frank Abbate, and Broadway Producer Ben Segal. Built in 1953, Melody Fair was the first true rotating circular stage, audience members are seated 360 degrees around the performers, and the furthest seat is 60 feet away.
A tent first enclosed this venue. Sporting folding chairs desending below grade on concrete rings, Melody Fair brought in unknown acts and promoted them to celebratity status. People such as Howie Mandel, Iron Butterfly, and Tony Award winner, Michael Bennett started here. This was before they became popular.
In 1970 Lew Fisher had a full dome built to enclose the summer stock theater. Now WalMart is trying to purchase the property to accomidate 37 parking spots in the proposed 970 car parking lot!
We are fighting hard, but don't know if we can stop them. If your interested in helping please sign our online petition.
