Hi, i am researching on the topic of the influence of japanese architecture on western countries, but find it very difficult to get information and resourse.
Here's my question, looking at the modern architecture nowadays, do you think there's an adaptation of Japanese Design in Western countries?
Anyone have comments or information on this topic?
Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi, Miranda. Yes, I think the ideas of Japanese architecture influenced the european and american a. wery much. Both in nowdays and in the whole XX cent.
If you want to discover the source of that influence it'll be food to fin a books of mid-XXcentury American designers, like George Nelson...
Hi wrote something like that: Mondern design have found an idea of open space by his own way and only then our cociety become interested in traditional Japaneese architecture, ultra - light and primitive but perfect.
Also popular in young generation ideas of purism and minimalism are inspirated first of all with contemprorary Japanese architects... |

A lot of Frank Lloyd Wright's designs were influenced by Japanese architecture, I believe I have a book on that specific subject at home. Probably just do a search on amazon for fllw in general and maybe japanese architecture too and you'll probably find it.

thank you.. very much for your replies, it's been a great help
anyone have more comments?!
Some people said the minimalist is too black and white- too plain and cold, so what would you prefer? The traditional western style or the hi-tech Japanese style? Personally, the attraction of modern architecture would be the structure and construction itself. Technology would the subject that the Japanese has impressed the world most!
Would you say the technology is also an important issue for the influence of japanese architecture on western countries?
What do you think? |

Miranda to find out more about the influence of japanese architecture in westrern architecture , you must make a small research about kisho kirukowa and his use of traditional japanese concepts in modern architecture...
you must reseach too about brutalist architecture that went from japan to the whole world...
if you need more specific details contact me :

Miranda,
Refer to a book called Katsura, by Kenzo Tange. It describes a building which was built in the early 1600s, but is very much a building of modern design.
Also, the traditional Japanese style, characterized by the buildings of the Ise Shrine, are good examples of the minimalist, pristine style which is modern architecture, even though those buildings were probably first constructed in the 4th century.
Also, find examples of the "shinden" style in Japan, from the 8th century onward, for simple elegant modernist style.
Do some research in the Asian section of the library for Japanese architecture.

Thank you for your information again!
Anyone heard of Kathryn Findlay (an Scottish archiect, who was also an associate professor of architecture at Tokyo University, and is now in Scotland)
Her works are extrodinary, she is well inspired by the Japanese culture when it comes to architectural design.
The building- Grafton New Hall in south Cheshire is a remarkable example.
A modern contemporary-starfish like- country house!
please take a look at this domestic architecture of 'outstanding architectural quality'- commented by the planning department!
